The Twitter Fail Whale is an illustration of a white beluga whale being lifted by a flock of birds, created by artist Yiying Lu, that Twitter displayed during service outages and over‑capacity periods before it was phased out in 2013.

Importance in Internet Culture

The Fail Whale captured the growing pains of early social media at scale and became a cultural shibboleth, “if you knew what the Fail Whale was, you were part of the inside group.” Its retirement in 2013 marked Twitter’s shift from scrappy, outage‑ridden startup to a more reliable, mass‑market utility.

Interesting Fact

Lu first drew the scene with an elephant and later switched to a whale while living in New South Wales; she uploaded the image to iStockphoto in July 2007, where Biz Stone licensed it for just “a few dollars.” Fans even organized Fail Whale parties and cocktails as the image’s cult status took off.
