The Sims (PC) is a 2000 life‑simulation game where players create and control virtual people called “Sims”, build and furnish their homes, and guide their everyday routines, relationships, and careers in an open‑ended suburban sandbox.

Importance in Internet Culture

The Sims helped normalize user‑generated content and participatory culture on the web, spawning large modding ecosystems such as The Sims Resource and enabling players to share stories, screenshots and early machinima. Its predominantly female audience broadened who engaged with PC games online and how they were discussed.

Interesting Fact

Simlish, the Sims’ nonsense language, originated from an improv exercise called “Foreign Poet” when voice actors Stephen Kearin and Gerri Lawlor improvised gibberish after attempts to combine real languages failed.
