Importance in Internet Culture

AOL’s March 1996 deal to make Internet Explorer its standard built‑in browser, and to be placed on the Windows 95 desktop, helped tip the browser wars while putting AOL within easy reach of millions of PC users. With about 6.2 million subscribers by mid‑1996 and more than 10 million by late 1997, AOL 3.0 became the mainstream on‑ramp that introduced a generation to going online.

Interesting Fact

“You’ve got mail” was recorded in 1989 by voice actor Elwood Edwards on a cassette deck in his living room for $200, after his wife at Quantum Computer Services volunteered his voice; the clip went on to greet tens of millions of users.
